SUNS BROTHERS SET TO SHINE

From an early age the Naughton brothers have enjoyed their Touch...even though it was sometimes trees they were playing against. Yes, real, actual trees.

Scott, 18 and Steve, 16 often played on their three acre property in Yass against each other before joining forces and playing against the many trees that filled the property.

They would pretend the trees were defenders and they would use them to practice running through gaps and other skills.

They still enjoy their Touch, but nowadays their opponents are a bit more talented than a couple of trees.

Over the years the boys have played together in various local teams and state cups, but never at a National event.

They are both playing for the Southern Suns Mens 18's team this week, who are fast becoming favorites to take home the title.

Growing up together on the Touch field has obvious advantages for the brothers and their Suns team.

"We both keep each other grounded, if one of us does something wrong the other isn't afraid to let them know about it," said Scott, who is the Suns Captain.

"We read each other pretty well. Often we don't even have to say anything and the other knows what we're going to do," said Steve.

Scott may have represented Australia at the 2005 Youth World Cup but his little brother has still taught him a few things.

"Stevie taught me the flick pass," said Scott.

Steve is also inspired by certain facets of his brother's game.

"He has a really good attitude, he gets everyone focused, which rubs off on me," said Steve.

Some of the Suns players were eligible to play for the various NSW schools teams but after winning the Under 20's title at this year's NTL, they made a pact to stay together and to try and win a National 18's title together.

The boys would both love to win the 18's National title and it would make it all the more special if they achieved this dream together.

"We both wanted to play at the highest level together and it would be great to win one together," said Scott.

Their family has made the trip to Coffs Harbour to watch the boys and their Dad Des is very proud of his sons.

"Obviously I'm pretty proud to see them playing together at a national title, it's a proud moment for me," said Des.

Suns Assistant Coach, Tony Eltakchi is impressed with the impact the Naughton brothers have on his team.

"Scottie's leadership qualities really inspire the boys and Stevie is a fast growing talent," said Tony.

"I'm glad I'm not playing against them!"
