Day 1 Queenstown to Invercargill!!! Monday 19 2004 18's Girls 1st Diary Entry The 18 girls got up bright and early to a very cold and overcast day. The adventure started with a quick breakfast at our accommodation then off for a brisk walk down the hill and into town to have what was for most of us our first Jet boat experience. But like all tours, nothing goes to plan. As the rain bucketed down, out trip was initially cancelled. With disappointment all over the girls faces (almost tears from Snoops) we were given our money back and to our delight told "go shopping". Bringing half a smile to our faces, we headed off in every direction to have a spree around Queenstown. A short time later along the girls came our rescuer Colm, informing us that a new Jet boat trip had now been arranged. Along with the U18 boys team, 7 brave girls headed out into the rain bullets for an hour of laughter and screams (not forgetting the numb fingers and toes). Arriving back, soaking wet but with huge smiles on our faces, we ran back to our bus to begin the 3.5 hour trip to Invergarcill. With our late start and late arrival into Invercargill, we only had a short 10 minute stop at our accommodation before hopping back on the bus, heading to the fields for our first game on tour. We had to play against an U21's mixed team as the southern areas of NZ don't have womens teams. With a lot of speed and agility, our tough opposition had us on our toes going down only 5-3 in our first match. Having only 45 minutes between games the girls only had time to warm down and up before heading back onto the field for our 2nd game against the same side. With much better performance, the girls ruck plays and defence started to come together, keeping to a nil all score line in the first half. With the scoreline at two all until the last few minutes and with a memorable dive by Emily Hopkins into a sideline fence head first after completely snapping one of the Kiwi boys, we only went down 3 - 2. Dinner was organised at our motel, and thankfully we ate first. I say lucky because the boys missed out on the great lasagne and ended up with a meal of fish and chips. The girls headed off for an early night ready for the trip to Dunedin in the morning. |
