National Touch League

SCORPIONS IN GOOD FORM

Scorpions men's open team look set for a good tournament following promising results in the 2002 National Touch League.

The classy team has produced some good results in the early rounds. The first round saw the team defeat the Rebels team, which has a strong Kiwi base. The end result of 6 - 1 was not a full indication of the game result.

The second game against last year's runners up and the highly fancied Sydney Mets team saw a 4 all result. This game was the bets game of the tournament to date and showed that these teams may meet again at the business end of the tournament, with the game being decided in the dying minutes. The Wayville draw system will result in the Scorpions finishing in the second pool of the competition.

The Scorpions boast a number of current Australian and former Australian players. Led by legendary former Australian captain Mark Boland, the Scorpions include current Australian players Jason Zabillio, Andrew Galea and first time representatives Jamie Stowie and Adam Lollback.

The team coached by Sam Ayoub will progress through the playoff games to the quarter-finals and potentially the final of the National Touch League if their form continues.

The Scorpions are playing an expansive game with lots of ball movement and are looking to go better than their performance last year, finishing outside the quarter-finals.

The Wayville draw system allows for teams to participate in similar competition levels in 3 pools and then progress through to the semi-finals. The Scorpions are in pool C and will progress through if they win the next two games.

The Scorpions Mixed number 1 team lost a late game in the rounds to the Sharks and added doubt to the suggestion that they are favorite in the mixed division. Led by the veteran Tony El Tackchi, the Scorpions were unable to match the enthusiastic running of the young Sharks side. Waving the flag for the Sydney teams is an underrated and unexpected Mets outfit, who have quietly dispensed with all opponents to date.

The Scorpions women's open team, battled gallantly against a star-studded Mets women's open team going down 7 - 1, after holding their more fancied rivals for most of the game. The Scorpions matched their classy rivals in the early stages and were unlucky on several occasions and it was either a 'dodgy' call, or last ditch defence, that prevented a more favorable outcome.

In the end the Mets got home but the Scorpions girls did their supporters proud.

In the first pool game of the second pool system the Scorpions men's team defeated the Barbarians team 10 - 0.
