Australia v Western Australia

Match 1

Girls

Australia 5 def Western Australia 0

Touch down scorers:
Kara Roffie 2, Roxy Winder 1, Dannielle Locke 1, Kate Adams 1

After a week of fine and hot weather the skies opened and the wind came on strong. The elements appeared to play a role in a match as both teams struggled to come to terms with the slippery ball and playing surface. The wet conditions didn't suit the usually long passing and fluent game of the Australians.

The first touch down came from good lead up and a simple wrap from Roxy Winder who found a hole in the defence to score. At the 12th minute some further good lead up from Natalie Giles was rewarded when Kara Roffey scored. Late in the half Danielle Locke supported Katie Shaw to take Australia into a 3 nil lead at half time.

The second half saw many mistakes with the Australians spoiling 4 chances of touch downs. However late in the half Kate Adams found pace and room outside her opponent to score. As the final siren sounded the Australians took advantage of a lapse in concentration by the West Australians and Kara Roffy made it a double for the match. Unfortunately the Australians lost Danielle Locke in the second half with damage to her knee. The injury is expected to keep her out of the rest series.

Boys

Australia 7 def Western Australia 4

Touch down scorers:
Josh Lewis 1, Mark Kovacic 1, Andrew Baggio 1, Shannon Sankey 2, Adrian O'Shanesy 2

As the rains cleared and the wind eased, the Australian boys team took on a strong Western Australian mens team. The young Australians played an expansive brand of touch, scoring 2 touch downs in the first half. A couple of lapses in concentration saw the West Australians score twice in the half as well.

In the second half the Australians came home strongly dominating the match, which at times was challenging for the referees.

Josh Lewis opening the scoring for Australia with a touch down in the 5th minute, Mark Kovacic finished the half scoring in the 19th minute.

In the second half Andrew Baggio scored off an tap move in the first minute of the half. The Australians scored at regular intervals with Shannon Sankey scoring in the 5th and 16th minute, and Adrian O'Shanesy scored in the 6th and 19th minutes.
